Fisher House Foundation is a nonprofit that builds, furnishes, and gifts lodging facilities known as Fisher Houses to U.S. military medical centers and VA hospitals. The Foundation pays construction and furnishing costs and typically engages the local community to raise roughly half the funds for a new house. Once a house is gifted, eligibility, priorities, and selection criteria are set by the receiving medical center; prospective guests are asked to contact the specific house manager for requirements and reservations. Fisher Houses at VA medical centers do not charge a room fee; for Army, Navy, and Air Force houses, the Foundation covers room fees for guest families. The organization also administers grant and award programs — for example, the Fisher Service Award (a multiwinner program distributing $250,000 in recent cycles and, since 1999, more than $2.75 million across about 200 nonprofit programs) — and sponsors scholarship programs for military children and spouses. Volunteer coordination and day-to-day volunteer opportunities are handled locally by each house.
