Sandy Wexler (2017)

Sandy Wexler is a warm, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt comedy that works best when it focuses on the relationship between its eccentric main character and the people he genuinely wants to help. Adam Sandler plays Sandy as an odd, overly talkative talent manager with questionable instincts but a sincere belief in his clients, and that combination gives the film much of its charm.

Sandler’s performance is deliberately exaggerated, especially Sandy’s voice and mannerisms, so the character may take some getting used to. Beneath the comedy, though, Sandy is portrayed as loyal, hardworking, and deeply committed to the struggling performers he represents. That makes him more sympathetic as the story develops.

Jennifer Hudson is excellent as Courtney Clarke and brings both charisma and emotional depth to the film. Her musical performances are among the highlights, and her relationship with Sandy gives the story a stronger emotional center than you might expect from the premise.

The movie also benefits from its 1990s setting and its many celebrity cameos, which create a playful sense of nostalgia around the entertainment industry. At more than two hours, it is longer than it needs to be, and some jokes are stretched too far, but there are enough funny and touching moments to keep it enjoyable.

Overall, Sandy Wexler is an affectionate comedy about loyalty, ambition, friendship, and believing in people before anyone else does. It may not be one of Adam Sandler’s most polished films, but its good nature, memorable performances, and unexpectedly sweet story make it an enjoyable watch.
