The Hand of God (film) (2021)

The Hand of God is a deeply personal, beautifully crafted coming-of-age film that blends humor, tragedy, family chaos, and youthful longing in a way that feels remarkably authentic. Paolo Sorrentino turns memories of growing up in 1980s Naples into something both intimate and cinematic, with the city itself becoming almost as important as any character.

Filippo Scotti gives an excellent, understated performance as Fabietto, a teenager trying to understand his family, his ambitions, and the unpredictable changes happening around him. The film takes its time, but that slower pace allows the characters and their relationships to feel real rather than simply moving the story from one event to another.

What makes the movie especially powerful is the contrast between its warmth and its sadness. Some scenes are genuinely funny and wonderfully eccentric, while others become unexpectedly painful. Sorrentino avoids making the film feel overly sentimental, even when dealing with experiences that are clearly very personal to him.

The cinematography is gorgeous, particularly in the way Naples, the sea, and the surrounding landscapes are presented. Football and Diego Maradona also play an important symbolic role, representing escape, hope, coincidence, and the strange ways seemingly small events can alter a person's life.

It may feel a little meandering to viewers who prefer tightly plotted films, but its emotional depth and memorable characters more than compensate. *The Hand of God* is ultimately a moving reflection on family, loss, adolescence, and discovering the path that can give meaning to difficult experiences.
