Donald Trump is one of the most consequential and controversial political figures of modern American history. Whether someone supports or opposes him, it is difficult to deny that he has fundamentally changed American politics and the way presidents communicate with the public.

One of Trump’s strongest qualities is his willingness to challenge established political conventions. He speaks directly, takes positions that many traditional politicians would avoid, and has consistently emphasized border security, illegal immigration, American manufacturing, trade imbalances and putting U.S. interests first. His supporters understandably see this as strength: they elected someone to disrupt the political establishment, and Trump has certainly done that.

His willingness to confront China and other trading partners over what he considers unfair trade practices is another area where I think he deserves some credit. Tariffs have become one of the defining tools of his economic policy. The goal of protecting American industry and reducing dependence on foreign production is reasonable, even if the way tariffs are implemented can create serious economic consequences of its own.

Immigration is similar. A country has every right to control its borders and enforce its immigration laws. Trump has forced the United States to confront problems in the immigration system that politicians have debated for decades without resolving. However, enforcement needs to remain proportionate, humane and consistent with constitutional protections. Some of his administration’s immigration policies have gone far beyond what I would consider a sensible enforcement policy.

My biggest criticism of Trump is his approach to leadership. A president should be capable of fighting hard for his policies without turning almost every disagreement into a personal battle. Trump too often insults opponents, attacks institutions and individuals publicly, and creates unnecessary conflict. This may energize supporters, but it also contributes enormously to political division.

I am also uncomfortable with attempts to stretch presidential authority simply because Congress, the courts or other institutions stand in the way of a desired policy. A strong president is not necessarily one who exercises the maximum possible power. Respect for constitutional limits and independent institutions matters precisely when those institutions produce decisions a president dislikes.

His economic record in his second term is also mixed. The administration has aggressively pursued tariffs, immigration restrictions and other major policy changes, but Americans ultimately judge economic policy by practical results: purchasing power, employment, housing affordability, prices and their standard of living. Those results deserve more weight than political slogans from either side.

Trump's greatest strength and greatest weakness may ultimately be the same thing: he refuses to behave like a conventional politician. That makes him unusually effective at challenging systems that deserve to be challenged, but it can also make his presidency unpredictable, confrontational and unnecessarily divisive.

I agree with some of his priorities, particularly stronger borders, confronting unfair international trade practices and requiring the government to put the interests of its own citizens first. But I disagree with many aspects of how he pursues those goals.

Donald Trump deserves neither the unquestioning admiration of his strongest supporters nor the automatic condemnation of his strongest opponents. His policies and actions should be judged individually. For me, the result is a mixed record: significant strengths, significant accomplishments, but also serious concerns about his methods, temperament and use of presidential power.
